The magnificent Classical mansion that is Chatsworth House, is one of the most celebrated Historic Houses in England. Built in the 17th-century for the Ist Duke, Chatsworth has been altered and added to by each incumbent, so that the glorious treasure house we see today, remains for the visitor, a constant source of fascination and amazement.
The elaborate beauty of Chatsworth is owed to it's great state apartments. The Great Chamber, is the largest room of these apartments, it has a ceiling painted by Verrio, and the intricate carving to the chimney-piece, is by Samuel Watson. There are elegant carved and gilded tables and beautiful chairs, the room is completed with wonderful paintings, silver and other priceless objects. It is one of the rooms that escaped alteration at a time when the 6th-Duke of Devonshire was carrying out enlargements to the house.
Of the other rooms to have been hardly altered is the splendid Chapel. A place of cool beauty, the chapel alter-piece was designed by Caius Gabriel Cibber, although only the two large alabaster figures to either side were carved by him. Samuel Watson carved the rest of the alter-piece, using the same alabaster. The richly decorated walls and ceiling were painted by Laguerre and Ricard, and Verrio painted the scene depicting Doubting Thomas.
The beautiful Orangery was built during the alterations carried out by the 6th-Duke of Devonshire whose architect, Sir Jeffry Wyatville, was responsible for an extension on the north-east side of the house which includes, picture and sculpture galleries and the grand Ballroom.
Chatsworth is set amid magnificent grounds, parkland and beautiful woodland. The Emporer fountain which jets water to a great height of 276ft was designed by Joseph Paxton, who in the 19th century planted many of the rare conifers that can still be seen today. The gardens have a magical atmosphere and should be enjoyed in leisurely fashion.
Rarely have I seen a great house which is so complete in all that it offers to the visitor and this must be attributed to the Dowager Duchess, who has been central to the development of the Chatsworth the public sees today. Chatsworth has a long tradition of welcoming visitors, and here there truly is something for everyone. You can view one of the finest private Art collections in England, or you can while away pleasant hours fly fishing on one of the estates two fisheries, so diverse are the opportunities this great Mansion offers. Chatsworth is a place of extraordinary beauty, that is quite simply overwhelming.
